Read full description of the books Yamada and The 7 Witches Vol. 02:Even though it's been more than a year since I've read this manga series, I actually was able to hop into this volume with no problems at all. Of course, I did have to briefly skim all of the first volume, but I like how this series is really easy to pop in and out of. At least, it will be for now.
At this point, Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches is still very much part body-swapping high-jinks, part horny teenage comedy (just the amount of fanservice in this volume accounts for the OT and 16+ rating on the back), and part surprisingly tender reflection of the identity of teenagers. Granted, every time a girl (or Yamada in a girl's body, as in the case here pretty much all the time) gets groped, I get uncomfortable even though I get it's supposed to make me laugh, but that's going to be a recurring element of this series that I'm just going to have to get used to.
Regardless, I'm having a lot of fun with this still, and I find myself smiling and laughing at a lot of pages. Yoshikawa is great at drawing all the shocked expressions for her characters (yelling with very obvious spittle flying) and I really like how distinct the designs are for her boys and girls and how when they're in each other's bodies makes for the absolute best thing ever. Their actions are so over the top and ridiculous because the guys think that's how the girls act and the girls are just being themselves in the guy's bodies (Shiraishi reading a book in Yamada's body always gets me). Besides the body-swapping stuff, though, the manga series also has some sweet moments. (view spoiler)[One of my favorites was when Yamada finished writing the kanji for the captain of the girl's archery club (Karen Kirishima) so it would be finished before the school demolished the old school building. They had to escape by breaking a wall because Ushio, an old acquaintance of Yamada's, locked them in the club room, but it was so touching that Yamada finished it even though he maybe could've gotten the girl to do it instead. Still, way to go for Yamada for realizing it meant a lot to Karen! (hide spoiler)] It makes for a well-balanced series that works well.
I'm looking forward to seeing what Nene's going to throw at the series next volume because we haven't reached the Witches part of the plot yet, and the Yamada and Shiraishi dynamic was oddly lacking this volume even though it's one of my favorite parts. They're just so awkward and adorable together.
(the scene from the manga does not end in a fall but is actually a Shiraishi directed one with a tapping on the shoulder; still, they adapted the choreography nicely)
Although I actually do like the Yamada and Miyamura stuff as well. I find it very odd that Miyamura only really seems to put the moves on a girl when Yamada's in their body, and while I'm pretty sure the manga is trying to make it seem that that's the excuse Miyamura is using to actually be pervy with girls, I have this suspicious feeling that Miyamura may just actually have feelings for Yamada and is also a big fan of the ladies at the same time. My current headcanon is that Miyamura's bisexual. Judging from one of the lines in the final chapter of this manga (which ended last month), I'm going to be keeping with that.
I know I'm going from first names to last names here. My bad. It'll be easier this way because that's how everyone is primarily referred.
